Since its inception, the gratings business of Newport Corporation has developed two key competencies:
- The generation of master gratings, both by mechanical ruling and by holographic recording.
- The replication of optically equivalent copies of the master gratings, in order to produce commercial quantities of gratings cost effectively.
Both of these key competencies are required to meet the demands of our customers, including timely deliveries of products, in high quantities, that meet all technical specifications with minimal part-to-part variation at reasonable cost.
Generation of Master Gratings
Newport Corporation possesses five ruling engines, of which three are in operation to produce spectroscopic-grade master gratings (the other two are used for training and R&D). Holographic recording facilities are used to produce plano (flat) and concave holographic master gratings.
Replication
Both types of master gratings (ruled and holographic) are replicated using essentially the same process, which allows hundreds and thousands of optically equivalent replica gratings to be produced from a single master grating.

Coatings
Aluminum is the standard coating for reflection gratings, though UV-protected aluminum, gold, silver, &c can be used as well to improve the performance of the grating in certain spectral regions.
Transmission gratings, which have no reflective coatings, are also available.
Grisms often have antireflection coatings on one face of the prism.
Testing and characterization
Newport Corporation has the following testing capabilities: More...

We are continually improving and adding to our testing capabilities, since "if you can't measure it, you can't make it."
OEM Services
Newport Corporation offers services required by some of our OEM customers: More...
- blanket ordering with several call-off deliveries, so that several month's supply of gratings can be ordered at once, with deliveries released as scheduled or as required by the customer;
- a kan-ban (pull) system so that excess inventory does not reside with the customer and a safety stock of gratings resides at Richardson Gratings;
- testing and certification to allow grating shipments to be sent directly to the customer's factory, without passing through a receiving inspection station; and
- technical advice regarding the use, selection and specification of gratings based on the customer's application, including participation in design reviews.
